Canon imagePROGRAF iPF PRO 4000 Reviews– The new printer driver is excellent and includes many advanced features that IPF users initially only have in the print plug-in. Options such as “No space up and down”, “Print on receipt is complete”, close to the end edge and the cutting speed control Available in the new driver (Note: X 400 printer also had these options in the driver, but the previous printers were not). The driver now supports custom page sizes at 65 feet (780 inches) and full 16-bit printing.

The driver includes the ability to save the image to the printer hard disk itself so that additional views can be made from the printer without the help of the workstation. My favorite plug-in feature was a print visualization that illustrates the role of paper and how the image will be placed on it. The new driver’s “Print Preview” feature allows for the same visualization with the addition of the paper cutting position visualization. The driver now supports the target printing of the ICC profile from the Adobe Color Print utility on MacOS and Windows, which will be the preferred method for Canon printers to go forward as it is with Epson printers. Savvy users MacOS IPF notice that the “special closet” that caused so many users to be covered by Doyle XML hack is no longer needed with this new driver.

While MacOS users will have a brand new, written from the underlying driver up, Windows users have two drivers to choose from, the corresponding Microsoft GDI transition to XPS print architectures. The Windows GDI driver is full of functionality, but it lacks support for 16 printing (GDI limitations). The new modern XPS driver supports 16-bit printing, but does not have some smaller GDI driver options (such as free layout). So there are tradeoffs to deal with when developing Windows drivers during this transition.

Canon Pro’s Print Studio is promoted to replace the older print plug-in. I think it’s a bad analogy in part because the old plug-in communicated directly to the printer without the driver and its limitations. Print Studio for impressions through the driver and honestly, I have a hard time seeing where the PSP could gracefully fit into my client’s workflows. PSP offers some new color adjustments, limited layout options, and gives Photoshop users a way to print multiple images at the same time. Despite this, the interface is embarrassing and I don’t understand what is right for today’s pros. Those who need to manage, layout and print a lot of images at the same time have already migrated from Photoshop and into applications like Lightroom, capture one, Imagenst, QImage and various RIP. Looking at the bigger picture, I think it’s important to find the best app for your workflow and printing this app (and probably the driver) makes sense.
